Introduction to the gong

A one-day practical training course (10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.)
Gongs are powerful and versatile instruments used in professional sound sessions. They can move from soft tones to strong waves of sound that fill a room. Because responses can vary, this training focuses on control, safety, and clear session structure.
This course is designed as vocational training for people who want to use gongs in paid work, including sound therapy, wellbeing sessions, yoga, and group facilitation. It also suits beginners who want a proper foundation. No musical background is needed. You only need curiosity, respect for the instrument, and a safe, grounded approach.
- Course time: 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
- Breaks: 15-minute break and 45-minute lunch

What you will learn
- The history of gongs and their role in sound work
- Common client responses to gong sound, and how to facilitate safely
- The main types of gongs, plus mallets, stands, and basic setup
- Safe technique, including grip, strike zones, volume control, and pacing
- How to create a range of tones with control, from gentle to strong
- How to plan, open, and close a gong session in a clear, professional way
- Best practice for group and one-to-one settings, including basic client briefing
- Basic care, handling, and safe storage
The day includes a 90-minute gong bath led by Éanna, followed by a short group discussion on pacing, volume, and session structure.
By the end of the day, you will be able to set up a gong safely, choose suitable mallets, and play with control. You will also be able to structure and guide a safe gong session for clients or groups.
Spaces are limited to 10 to keep the training hands-on.

Diploma in Sound Medicine
